Amino acids from space

While serving as President of the Academy of Sciences, M. V. Keldysh strongly contributed to the development of international cooperation in solving common problems for all mankind. He understood that such cooperation helps to defuse tension in international relations and serves the cause of peace. Mikhail Keldysh became one of the initiators of the creation of the Intercosmos Council, facilitated the conclusion of an agreement between the USSR and the USA on conducting a joint experimental flight Soyuz — Apollo and made a great contribution to the organization and successful completion of this flight.

Mstislav Vsevolodovich was convinced that space should be used only for peaceful purposes. Back in 1962, speaking at a conference of the Soviet public and at the World Congress for Disarmament and Peace, he warned against nuclear explosions in low-Earth orbit. M. V. Keldysh pointed out that these explosions would disrupt a complex set of geophysical phenomena in near-Earth space and in the upper atmosphere and could affect living conditions on Earth. Mstislav Vsevolodovich called on all scientists and all progressive people of the Earth to fight for peaceful space, complete disarmament, and the prohibition of nuclear testing. He was well aware of the danger of using scientific achievements for military purposes, leading to the creation of a gigantic potential for death and destruction. In one of his speeches, Mstislav Vsevolodovich quoted from a play by Bertolt Brecht.

Ironically, "The Life of Galileo" was staged in the United States at the very time when American planes bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Appealing to scientists all over the world to prevent the results of their work from being used to harm humanity sounds especially relevant today. Deadly Star Wars weapons have no place in space. Right now, there is still time to unite the efforts of all people of good will and prevent the catastrophe being prepared by the militaristic circles of the United States. Mikhail Keldysh tirelessly fought for strengthening international relations between scientists, for detente and peace. Outer space should be a zone of peace, a zone of uniting the efforts of mankind in learning the secrets of the universe — these words of Mikhail Keldysh are now becoming the slogan of all progressive-minded people on the planet.

M. V. Keldysh can rightfully be called one of the outstanding scientists of our time. He is a prominent representative of world science of the twentieth century, the founder of a large scientific school, the creator of new directions in applied mathematics, aerodynamics and space technology. In the history of cosmonautics, the name of Mstislav Vsevolodovich Keldysh will always stand next to the names of Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky and Sergei Pavlovich Korolev.

Japanese geochemists K. Harada from the University of Tsukuba and K. Yanai from the National Institute of Polar Research in Tokyo performed an analysis of the substance of the Yamato meteorite No. 791198, found by the Japanese Antarctic expedition in 1979. The meteorite belongs to carbonaceous hopdrites containing relatively much (more than 2%) carbon. Falling to Earth, such meteorites are usually polluted with carbon substances of local (including biogenic) origin. As for the Yamato meteorite No. 791198, it retained its original composition, as it fell on an Antarctic glacier.

Amino acids have been found in meteorites before, but this is the first time they have been found in such abundance (670·109 moles per 1 g of substance). Yamato No. 791198 contained twenty types of amino acids, with the most being the rare nonbiogenpon (or nonbiological) alpha-aminoisobutylic acid. It was followed by the amount of biogenic (or biological) amino acids glycine and alannine. Some biogenic amino acids, such as threonine and leucine, were present only in small amounts.

The presence of all five of the above-mentioned butyl amino acids indicates the inorganic (abiogenic) origin of these substances, whatever their extraterrestrial source. This discovery does not confirm the hypothesis of panspermia, according to which life was brought to Earth from the outside, already in a "ready-made" form.
